ポール・マッカートニーによる裁判手続きによってビートルズの解散が法的に決定された1971年3月12日にイギリスで発表された。
歌詞では、「revolution（革命／レボリューション）」という単語がストレートに使われ、資本家・権力者に搾取・支配される労働者階級の人々へ「立ち上がれ」、「Power To The People（人々に力を）」とメッセージを投げかける革命歌的な内容となっている。

ジョン・レノンは1971年1月に、革命思想的なマルクス主義系の新聞社「レッド・モール」と対談を行っており、過激な思想を持つインタビュアーに触発されて、今までより強く直接的なメッセージソング『Power To The People』をたった一日でほぼ完成させた。
インタビュアーは、イギリスの労働運動家タリク・アリと歴史学者ロビン・ブラックバーン。二人は以前から、ジョン・レノンとオノ・ヨーコらによるベッドインなどの活動について、受動的・非暴力的手段にすぎず、直接行動よりも効果がないと紙上で批判していた。
